Making Natural House Paints

An Online Talk With Caroline Nicolay

Tuesday 20th May 4-6 BST

Join live or watch the recording. The recording will be available for three months after the live event. PDF handout included.

In this talk, Caroline Nicolay aims to answer the "why?", "Where?" and "How?" of the use of natural paints in one's own home and historic buildings. Taking inspiration from the past and the incredibly long tradition of using homemade paints to protect and decorate houses, we will have a look at how you can make your own interior and external paints, sharing recipes and tips.

Starting by a quick look at what buildings used to be painted with (and still are in many places), we will explain why most modern paints cause huge problems to buildings, humans and the environment in general. Natural paints can be applied to many surfaces in a building, or for crafts. Anyone can make some of their own architectural paints at home, but Caroline will also advice on what to look for when buying readymade "natural" paints, so that you can get appropriate, safe, sustainable and beautiful colours in your home - without needing to make it all yourself, if you don't fancy it!
