Join Winona Quigley, Founder of Green Matters Natural Dye Company, for an immersive online workshop diving into the fundamentals of natural dye techniques: mordanting and creating solid colours on textiles with plant-based materials. We will focus on the plant dyeing techniques that Green Matters has developed for commercial plant dye production, but can also be translated to the home dye studio. Whether you are dyeing garments, fabric, yarn or raw fibre, this class will have tools for you. 

This course will include detailed notes on recipes, including images and video.

Winona Quigley

Winona Quigley grew up in Lancaster Pennsylvania. After moving to New York to attend Parsons School of Design and working with a variety of fashion houses, she began to develop a body of natural dye research which sparked the development of Green Matters Natural Dye Company. She returned to Lancaster to open a dye house that offers plant based commercial dye services to fashion brands as an alternative to synthetic dye, which has an outsized impact on global waterways. In 2021, she was listed on the Forbes 30 under 30 in the Manufacturing and Industry category. As of today, Green Matters’ clients include Chipotle Mexican Grill, Alex Mill, and Stitch Fix.

Exploring Natural Dyestuffs: Delve into the diverse world of botanical sources for natural dyes. From roots and leaves to flowers and bark, discover the potential of various plant materials in creating stunning colour variations.

Gain knowledge of how to work with raw plant material that is foraged or grown in your garden, food waste from your kitchen, as well as plant extracts, and where to source them.

Preparing Fibres for Dyeing: Learn essential pre-treatment techniques to ensure optimal dye absorption and colorfastness. Explore different types of fibres and their compatibility with natural dyes.

Mordants and Modifiers: Understand the role of mordants and modifiers in enhancing colour intensity and shifting hues. Explore natural substances that can alter and enrich the dyeing process.

Troubleshooting and Tips: Through 10 years of commercial scale natural dyeing, the Green Matters team has made a lot of mistakes to learn from! This course will highlight some of the often tricky parts of the dye process, and how to navigate them gracefully.
